You’ve been in business for a while now. You’re getting to know more about the type of client you’re trying to attract, the ways you really want to serve them, and the transformation you can offer. You may even be getting many questions about whether your services are right for people in certain situations.
Congratulations! All your hard work is paying off and you are GROWING!
I want to remind you, though, that if you and your business are growing and changing, your messaging is, too.
This is why it’s so important to regularly check in with the message you’re sharing with the world. Because if your brain and copy aren’t on the same page, you risk alienating your leads with conflicting and confusing ideas—which will send them and their business elsewhere.
But Val, how do I “check in” with my messaging?
I’m so glad you asked! Below you will find three simple questions you can ask yourself to check this task off your to-do list this week.
Over time, our businesses grow and change. We realize a service may not feel good to us or come to a new realization about who we want to serve. What have you noticed about doing business over the past year, and do you still want to continue serving the same person? If not, adjust your copy to attract that new person and repel the one who you’ve pivoted from.
As I’ve said and will continue to say, your messaging and sales copy isn’t about you. It’s about your dream client. Talking about yourself and how great you are won’t sell your services. You need to show your dream client what’s in it for them. A great way to analyze this is to take note of how many sentences start with “I” and “You.” If there’s an imbalance, see how you can frame some of you “I” sentences into “You” sentences.
It’s so easy to get caught up in what other people in your industry are saying and mirroring their messaging because you see it working for them. But is it really what you want to say? Check in on that message on your heart and make sure it’s coming through the way you want it to and not being made to fit in someone else’s voice or idea.
It can be hard to check-in and re-evaluate a message we like or spent so much time on, but it’s so necessary to help ensure we’re setting our businesses up for success.
That’s why I want you to carve out some time on your calendar—and really, make the appointment or block it out so it actually happens—and spend some time with these questions. Be honest with yourself and identify those areas of growth that need your attention.
